Very often we throw out household waste without realising how else it could be used. Below are some suggestions of ways to reuse things you may previously have thrown out.

CEREAL BOXES. If your room's a mess, then cereal boxes are wonderful. Cut off the top of the box and part of the thin side. If you want, paint it (remember to put down newspaper so that you don't paint the table!). Once it's dried, you've got a folder for your papers.

Alternately, you can put your painting skills to the test by painting a face on the inside of one side of the box and then ask an adult to cut out the eyes and a mouth so that you have a mask. Never use scissors unsupervised - it's best to ask an adult to do the cutting for you. Once they've cut out the eyes and mouth, ask them to cut two very small holes in the side so you can put string in. Remember to be creative - you can be a clown, an animal, an alien - whatever you want!

SHOEBOX SUCCAH. Take the lid off the shoebox and put it aside for the moment. Turn the shoebox upside down and paint it a wooden colour. When the paint is dry, cut out most of one side so that you have a large opening (note again that cutting should always be done with an adult present). Cut fairly wide slits in the top so that the inhabitants of your succah can see the stars. Then take the lid and draw out various small fruit shapes. Cut them out carefully and tie them onto the roof struts with string so that they hang down. If you want, decorate the succah with tissue paper or you could put small pipe-cleaner people inside (made by twisting pipe cleaners together).

EGG SHELLS. When you have a boiled egg, only cut off the very top and try to eat the egg without breaking any more of the shell. Once you've finished the egg, clean it out inside, but be careful not to crack it. Turn it upside down and very gently colour on it a face. Then find a plant in a pot and put your egg person on the soil next to the plant. After a while, you'll have lots of different egg characters to liven up your plants.

BOTTLE ORCHESTRA. Always be very careful with glass. However, before you take your bottles down to the recycling centre, you might want to fill them up with different amounts of water. If you lightly take a stick then the bottles will all play different notes. Arrange them from lowest note on the left to highest on the right, and then play a tune like on the piano. Remember not to play with glass unless supervised, though.

LOO ROLL CROQUET. All you need for this game is a number of used toilet rolls and a marble. Set up a course with the used loo rolls at different angles to each other and then see how many pushes of the marble it takes to roll it through all the rolls. If you hit the side of a roll beware, because it will roll around the floor and will take a few more pushes of the marble. You could even challenge other people to see who can get round your course in the least amount of pushes.

TIN CAN ALLEY. Collect 10 clean tin cans together on a non-carpeted floor. Arrange them in a triangle, with four in a line at the back, three in front of them, two in front of them and one at the very front. Make sure you have permission before you play this game. Take a small ball and roll at the cans to see how many you can knock over - its your own bowling alley!

Remember before you throw something out to be imaginative - is there any way you can use it to reduce the amount of waste in your family?
