If you've never grown your own plants before, then you're really missing out on a marvellous opportunity! Not only do plants make
a room look nicer, but they're great fun to watch grow. Make sure that you follow the instructions on the tag and try to get one that will grow or at least change colour, otherwise you lose some of the enjoyment. Also
ask your parents or guardians before you buy a plant, to avoid arguments about whether or not you can keep it. Here are a couple of plants you might grow: Cress.
Cress is the easiest thing in the world to grow. Pour the cress seeds onto some wet cotton wool on a dish and put them in the light. Make sure that the cotton wool stays watered over the next few days and watch as the cress keeps on growing... after a while, you can eat it! It turns out that you can buy cress at the supermarket nowadays, but that's no fun!
Beans.
Beans aren't plants, but you can grow them in a see-through cup or glass filled with wet cotton wool. Put the bean half-way down the glass and make sure the cotton wool stays watered. The interesting thing about this is watching the roots and bean grow. However while you can't eat the bean, you can go and plant it and wait for the beans to grow.
The Spider Plant.
Don't worry - the spider plant has nothing to do with spiders, it gets its name because its leaves spread out like a spider's legs. Spider plants are very easy to grow and what's more they're good for you
because they ionise the air in the room. They need a good amount of light and must be kept moist (as with most plants), but you just have to make
sure that as the plant gets bigger you get a bigger pot. What's great about spider plants is that smaller spider plants grow from them, which you can cut off and use to grow more, or you can just leave to hang.
Pointsetta. A much more challenging plant to grow - you have to make sure that this plant stays well-watered, but when its well the leaves are a lovely colour.
Venus FlyTrap. A very difficult and fairly icky plant to grow. The venus flytrap
is a carnivorous plant - it really does eat flies! It's very tempting to touch the insides to watch it close but that's very bad for it - a couple of times and you'll kill
the plant! You have to feed the plant once every few days with a fly too... a very strange and difficult plant indeed.
