Cycling is a very environmentally friendly way to travel, and is also tremendously good for you. When you travel around by bike
you don't let out any fumes that pollute the air, you don't make much noise, you don't add to traffic jams and exercise is very important. But if you do cycle you have to remember two things:
Firstly, cycling on
the road can be very dangerous. Before you cycle on the road, you MUST take a cycling proficiency test - telephone your local council and ask when the next course is. Road awareness is very important and it's best to
learn in a safe environment with trained professionals. If you aren't able to take a cycling proficiency test then you should at least go with an adult every time you cycle on the road.
Secondly, certain equipment is very important when you ride on a bicycle - a helmet protects you in case you fall and reflective clothing
makes sure that you can be seen by other road users. We recommend hard-shell helmets for better protection of the head, a reflective sash and light-coloured clothing.
If you are going to cycle at night, you must have
lights and reflective clothing becomes even more important.
It is important to plan your route carefully - try to avoid major roads if possible so as to miss traffic and pollution. Also try to remember that flatter
routes are easier than hilly ones.
Bicycle care is very important. You should have your bike checked once a year at least to ensure the brakes are working, the treads on the tyres are acceptable and so on.
You
should also buy a chain or lock so that you can leave your bike safely. If you take your bike to a Police station, they can mark it with a magic pen so that if the bike gets stolen, it is always marked with your
postcode - increasing the chances of getting it returned at some point in the future.
